Interesting article on video modeling. The movement to go visual and stop relying exclusively on verbal teaching methods is one I think you all know I strongly believe in. Think about how you might use video modeling to teach your child a new skill (like introducing himself to a friend before a play date, or entering a classroom on the first day at school). Then try it out with a short video.

I still feel the same horrible anxiety I did as a kid when anything but my head and the arm I put under my pillow is not covered by the sheets and the comforter on my bed. It's kind of a joke with my husband now.

"I'm hot."
"Then stick your leg out of the blankets like I do."
"But...the MONSTERS!"

That's the anxiety bordering on fear that I know is ridiculous, and still I can't make myself sleep uncovered, even knowing there are no monsters that will eat me. But even harder to dodge - since the blankets protect me, after all - it that low hum of anxiety that will probably keep me on medication for the rest of my life. I recognized the anxiety years before I accepted the depression, and I accepted the depression several years before I realized I was an Aspie and got the official diagnosis from my psychiatrist.

I'm still trying to sort out healthy coping mechanisms versus the not-so-healthy ones. I wish I'd understood this growing up. I wish my parents had understood it, too. At least my son will have a decent go of it now.

Thank you for writing this.

Natalia - this tax law is very complicated. There are many circumstances under which a child may or may not be eligible for the credit. Being in Kindergarten is not a requirement; the law simply has slightly different requirements for children with special needs who are going from a pre-school situation into private or home schools. If you are not sure if your child would qualify or not based on the information in this blog or on our website at http://autismsociety-nc.org/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=398&Itemid=759 I recommend that you contact me directly by phone (not email). I'll typically need to ask you a series of questions to understand if you meet the eligibility requirements for the credit. Please check out the ASNC website article in this link above before you call. Thanks!

Celeste, as you know, and as we have spoken about on the phone, these are complicated issues. You have done all the right things in contacting the LME MCO and in asking for a response from both the DD specialist as well as the care coordinator. If you are still having problems getting these questions answered, you may want to give Katie Holler, your local Parent Advocate a call back and ask for her assistance in getting the information from Eastpointe. I think you have Katie's number, but if not she can be reached by leaving a message at 800 357 2762.

Comment on 1915 b/c Waivers and Autism: What Does Managed Care Mean to Me or my Child? by mahanjk

Clay, I recommend that you speak with one of our parent advocates in the area that you intend to move to in North Carolina. For the Innovations waiver (our home and community based Medicaid waiver that provides community services to those with intellectual and developmental disabilities) the person must first be determined to be eligible for the waiver (need to meet ICF-IDD/MR level of care) then, there is the wait for services. Waiting lists are now being managed based on the length of time on the list (first come first serve). Because the waiver is not an entitlement, it is based on the funds appropriated by the legislature, there are a limited number of slots. Until recently slots had been "frozen" for several years. There are an estimated 7,000-10,000 people waiting for services (estimates vary because not all those on the wait list need Innovations slots). With anywhere from zero to only a few hundred slots being added each year, the wait can be very, very long. She may qualify for other services under Medicaid, but those are limited in duration and scope. If you have services now and do not need to move, I would caution against a move to NC.
